Rattans are climbing spiny palms with edible fruits. They naturally grow in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and western Africa and have been associated with the development of indigenous cultures in these regions. Presently they are mainly used to produce furniture items and the market for these is growing steadily. Due to the unique structural properties of rattan wood, rattan poles can be split to yield splits, cores and narrow slivers, which are flexible longitudinal sections of wood much broader than they are wide. They may also be split further into coarse or fine threads. All are very verstile and can be used to produce a huge variety of products. Woven rattan products have many close associations with different cultures and are readily accepted by consumers. In addition to handicrafts and articles of daily-use, many agricultural items are also woven from rattan.
Bamboo grows in clumps. It can be harvested in 3-5 years versus 10-50 years for most softwoods and hardwoods. After harvested and processed, craftsmen weave many chunks of bamboo into products. Woven bamboo products also are favourite items in many markets.
In the page there are some of Woven Bamboo and Rattan products.
